Hello London: BMD opens new studio in Southwark

BMD London this Way

Our new Southwark studio brings us closer to the London clients and collaborators we've worked with for years.

We're delighted to share that Bradley Murphy Design has opened a London studio in Southwark. It's home to Will, Andrew, Ava and Bea, four landscape architects who bring additional strength and depth across delivery, public realm, regeneration and landscape planning. They work as one team with our landscape architects, ecologists and urban designers in Birmingham.

London isn't new territory for us. We’ve been working here for 15 years, securing consent for and delivering schemes across London boroughs including Hounslow, Hillingdon, Ealing, Tower Hamlets and Lewisham. Our most recent experience includes higher-density residential development at Fulton & Fifth in Wembley and Great North Leisure Park in Finchley, both for Arada London, alongside mixed-use leisure and public realm projects in Kingston and Newham. We also continue to work on major strategic communities across the wider South East, including Guildford and Chelmsford. Many of the clients, design teams and collaborators we work with across the country are based here too.

“We've been working with London-based clients and design teams for years, on projects here in the capital and right across the country, but having a studio here with such a great team in post is a real step forward. Andrew, Will, Ava and Bea bring a strong mix of experience to the business, and having them in London gives us more agility and allows us to be more present on the projects we’re working on. Some of our best ideas come from being round the table sketching, or out on site with clients and the wider team, and those face-to-face conversations make the design collaboration richer, more creative and, frankly, a lot more fun!"

Meet the team

Andrew Scanlon, Senior Landscape Architect

Andrew Scanlon, Senior Landscape Architect

Andrew brings more than seven years’ experience across Ireland, the UK and the Middle East, working on residential, mixed-use, commercial and leisure projects. His experience spans concept design through to technical delivery, with particular strengths in urban regeneration, sustainable placemaking and inclusive landscape design. He is also helping develop BMD’s Revit and BIM workflows to support stronger digital design and multidisciplinary coordination.

"I've always been drawn to regeneration, where thoughtful landscape design can create meaningful, inclusive places that respond to their character and last for future generations. Being part of BMD London means bringing that to a wider range of projects, getting to know more of the London design community and working closely with the team in Birmingham too."

Ava Dunning, Senior Landscape Architect

Ava Dunning, Senior Landscape Architect

Ava is a public realm specialist with experience taking ambitious landscape schemes from early concept through to construction. Having worked at John McAslan + Partners and Turkington Martin, she has contributed to award-winning streets and public spaces in London and Glasgow, alongside residential development and large-scale masterplanning. Her strength lies in developing strong design concepts and carrying them through to the detailed decisions that give a place its identity.

"I enjoy the challenge of finding a strong concept that really responds to a site, and then working across scales, from the bigger landscape strategy down to the details that give a place its identity. It's exciting to be part of setting up BMD's London studio from the start, and I'm looking forward to learning from the team's expertise in ecology and landscape-led masterplanning."

Bea Tann, Project Landscape Architect

Bea Tann, Project Landscape Architect

Bea specialises in landscape planning, with experience across landscape and visual assessment, early-stage site analysis and mitigation design. A First Class MLA graduate from the University of Sheffield, she also has a strong design background through show gardens, becoming the youngest medal winner at the 2022 RHS Chelsea Flower Show with a Silver-Gilt award. Her work combines evidence-based landscape advice with a strong understanding of design and place.

"I really enjoy being involved right at the start of a project, when clear, evidence-based landscape advice can help shape development that respects the character of a place. Joining BMD London from the outset is a brilliant opportunity, and I'm looking forward to working across a wide range of projects with such a collaborative, forward-thinking team."

Will Brewer, Senior Landscape Architect

Will Brewer, Senior Landscape Architect

Will specialises in the delivery of complex, high-density landscape projects from planning through to construction. His experience includes major residential and mixed-use schemes, podium gardens, roof terraces and technically challenging urban sites. A skilled project manager, he works closely with clients, consultants and contractors to resolve practical issues while protecting the original design intent and ensuring schemes remain robust and deliverable.

"What I love is taking a scheme beyond planning and bringing it to life. There's a real satisfaction in working through the detail with the wider team and then seeing it become a place people actually use and enjoy. London has so much variety, and I'm looking forward to building new relationships here and taking on projects that bring fresh challenges."

Closer to the people we work with

Having a team based in London gives us more flexibility in the way we work day to day. We can get around the table more easily, get out to site to help resolve technical issues early and stay closely involved as projects move forward.

Just as importantly, it gives us more opportunities to bring landscape and ecology into the conversation early and keep that thinking joined up as designs develop.

For our clients and collaborators, it’s still the same friendly, collaborative, landscape-led BMD approach, just with more of us closer to the people and projects we’re working with. We’re excited to build on the work we’re already doing across London and the South East, support those projects more closely and create more opportunities to work together.
